Stanley Milgram shocked the world with psychology experiments designed to see how far people will go in support of authorities they trust for one reason or another. Generally, when told to, people will go further than you want to believe at punishing others. Dependence on authority suggests that few of us truly make our own moral decisions.

How does having others around impact the way in which you respond to needs for help? People take action alone, and yet when others are around and NOT taking action, we take cues from others and tend to not respond.

Phil Zimbardo was surrounded by evil as a kid, so took the interest into a career as a psychologist trying to understand things like American torture at Abu Ghraib. This update of studies on authority parallels the earlier work by Milgram.
